MISSION:FELLOWSHIP & COMMUNITY 7

The word ‘fellowship’ today is used to describe gatherings ranging from coffee and donuts to worship services. Most times it’s associated with a gathering where there is eating. There’s nothing wrong with calling these fellowships, but the word fellowship is more accurately seen as a verb, rather than a noun.  While these times are important and give us opportunity to be with one another to better get to know our church family, their main purpose is to promote fellowship with each other.

The Greek word that is translated fellowship in the Bible is ‘Koinonia’: “common”; “I participate in; I share in.” (W.E. Vine, Expository Dictionary of New Testament words). Koinonia: “fellowship, association, community, communion, joint participation”

The word used in first century church, went far beyond occasional or regular gatherings. They did meet because of their common bond in Christ, and met at the same place and time, for a unified purpose.  But in its purest sense fellowship is a HEART issue.  It’s something to be felt and expressed, and something very important to be a part of. It should occur apart from any program, schedule, or activity. It’s to be a way of life for believers in Jesus Christ.  True fellowship means we want to be in each other’s company, to share things together and to help and support each other both physically and spiritually. If one of the members hurt we share that burden. If another rejoices, we rejoice with them.
